Urgent Recall: Walmart’s Marketside Broccoli Florets Linked to Deadly Listeria Contamination

The recall pertains specifically to 12-ounce packages of washed and ready-to-eat Marketside Broccoli Florets with a “best if used by” date of December 10, 2024. The product was voluntarily recalled by its producer, Braga Fresh, on December 27, 2024, after routine testing revealed potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can lead to severe and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of listeriosis can include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Notably, infections during pregnancy can result in miscarriages and stillbirths.

While the affected broccoli is past its “best if used by” date and should no longer be available in stores, consumers who may have frozen the product for later use are at risk. The possible contamination was identified through random sampling conducted by Texas Health & Human Services at a Walmart location in Texas. One of the multiple samples tested positive for Listeria monocytogen … , prompting the voluntary recall by Braga Fresh.
