We’ve already seen wheelchair scooters and Wheelchair bike attachments. But the wheelchair itself has not yet received the 21st-century upgrade it deserves.
That is until this Self Balance Stair-Climbing Wheelchair entered the stage.
This is Scewo a modern mobility device that eliminates everyday obstacles for wheelchair users.
Apart from the futuristic design, the first thing you notice is the fat-tire wheels. These allow the one in the chair to tackle curbs and other obstacles.
No entanglements, no loss of balance. If the drop or climb is particularly steep the chair uses two additional wheels that emerge out of the back of the chair.
These back wheels can also lift the user up to reach something, say, in the fridge or be on the eye-level with someone.
The second thing you notice is the rubber tank-like treads. These allow the chair to travel up and down the stairs. Any stairs, even the spiral ones.
The whole process is automated as well as the landing. The treads can also come in handy when tackling slippery or uneven surfaces (like gravel).
This wheelchair is still in development. It’s not available for sale yet but it looks like it’s definitely worth waiting for.
