Felicia Hambrick, babysitting her best friend’s infant, used her own body to shield the baby from a rampaging pit bull, absorbing over 40 bites.

A Weekend That Changed Everything

Felicia Hambrick had agreed to babysit her best friend Cassy’s children while Cassy and her husband went away for a weekend anniversary trip. The day started like any other, with Hambrick caring for Cassy’s three children—two boys, ages six and three, and an eight-month-old girl named Sophia. But what was meant to be a quiet weekend turned into a nightmare.

It was on the morning of October 29, as the children finished breakfast, that everything took a terrifying turn. Hambrick heard Roscoe, a full-grown pit bull, attempting to get out of the bedroom. What followed would be a traumatic event that changed her life forever.

The Start of a Horror

Without warning, Roscoe burst out of the bedroom, running straight toward Hambrick and the baby she was holding. As the dog lunged at her, Hambrick’s natural instinct kicked in: she threw herself on top of Sophia to protect her. But the pit bull wasn’t interested in the baby—it went straight for Hambrick.

“I knew he didn’t want her,” Hambrick later recalled. “He was coming after me.” As Roscoe began to bite her, Hambrick fought to shield the baby’s head from harm. The dog’s ferocity sent Hambrick crashing to the ground, where she continued to protect the infant at all costs.

Hambrick’s Struggle for Survival

The attack escalated quickly as Roscoe tore into Hambrick’s body. Despite her attempts to protect herself, the dog bit her relentlessly on her arms, legs, stomach, and neck. Hambrick screamed for help, but the pain was so intense that, at one point, she wished for death.

“I remember it hurting so bad that I was literally screaming, ‘I just want to die. Oh God, please let me die,'” she recalled in a tearful interview. But even as she faced unimaginable pain, her focus remained on protecting the baby.

Cassy’s Mother Fights Back

The chaos continued as Cassy’s mother, who had been outside smoking a cigarette, rushed inside upon hearing Hambrick’s screams. Armed only with a broom, she desperately tried to fight Roscoe off. But the dog was relentless, and when Roscoe retreated briefly, it gave Cassy’s mother enough time to grab baby Sophia and get her to safety.

However, before she could return to help Hambrick, Roscoe came back, launching a second attack on the already exhausted woman. The brutal assault lasted at least 15 minutes, with Cassy’s mother continuing to fend off the dog as Hambrick suffered bites that left her covered in wounds.

Help Arrives Just in Time

It wasn’t until a neighbor, having heard the screams, called 911 that help arrived. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, and Hambrick was quickly transported to the hospital. By then, she had lost consciousness from the pain and shock.

Despite the horror she endured, Hambrick’s injuries were miraculously less severe than they could have been. The dog’s bites didn’t sever any tendons or break any bones, but they left deep, painful wounds all over her body. In the hospital, doctors found that Hambrick had received nearly 100 staples to close her wounds.

Hambrick’s Strength and Resilience

Hambrick’s recovery was nothing short of miraculous. She spent five days in the hospital, but the journey ahead remains long and challenging. In addition to the staples used to close her wounds, Hambrick will need multiple surgeries, including skin grafts, muscle and tendon repairs, and months of physical therapy.

Despite the immense pain she’s endured, Hambrick says she has no intention of hiding her scars. “I would never get plastic surgery to make them look less than they are,” she said. “I’m going to learn to love them.”

Hambrick’s Struggle with Dogs

While Hambrick’s physical wounds will eventually heal, the emotional toll is something she will have to contend with for much longer. She has expressed difficulty trusting dogs, especially larger breeds, and admits that she’s now fearful of them.

“It’s kind of hard to trust the bigger ones. For now,” she said. However, Hambrick is determined not to let one bad incident define her relationship with dogs. “I don’t want to not like them because of one bad incident,” she added.

Her therapist has planned a gradual exposure to dogs to help her overcome her fears, but for now, Hambrick remains haunted by nightmares involving dogs. The trauma from the attack is something she will need time to overcome.

Cassy’s Guilt and Thanks

Cassy, who had entrusted her best friend with her children, was devastated when she learned of the attack. “If I was home, this wouldn’t have happened,” she said, blaming herself despite Hambrick’s assurances that it wasn’t her fault. “She’s my best friend. Because of me, her life is forever changed.”

However, alongside her guilt, Cassy expressed immense gratitude for the sacrifice Hambrick made to protect her child. “I’m so thankful for her,” Cassy said. “If the dog had gotten to my baby in any way, she could have died. I’m so thankful that Felicia took that and put it on herself instead of my baby.”

Euthanasia After the Attack

Following the attack, Roscoe was seized by animal control, and his fate was sealed. Despite his earlier mild behavior, the attack on Hambrick and the threat to the baby made it clear that the dog could no longer remain in the household. After being evaluated, Roscoe was euthanized. Cassy, despite the pain of the situation, expressed that there was no choice but to part with the dog. “We wanted nothing to do with him,” she said.

The decision was difficult for the family, who had hoped that Roscoe would be a loving companion. However, after the attack, it was clear that the dog posed too great a risk.

A Heroic Act of Sacrifice

Felicia Hambrick’s selfless act of protecting her best friend’s child at the cost of her own safety is nothing short of heroic. The scars she now carries are a reminder of the sacrifices she made in the face of unimaginable danger. As she continues her recovery, both physically and emotionally, Hambrick remains steadfast in her determination to heal, not only for herself but also for the friends and family who have supported her.

Her story is a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit, and a reminder that sometimes, true heroism comes when we least expect it. Felicia Hambrick may have been the victim of a brutal attack, but she is also the hero of a story that will inspire many for years to come.
